Prof. Patrick Holligan

Patrick is Professor Emeritus in Biological Oceanography at the University of Southampton. He has held positions at the Marine Biological Association, Plymouth (1973-87), Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, Maine, USA (1988-89), Plymouth Marine Laboratory (1990-94) and University of Southampton (1995-2006). He was the first Chairperson (1992-95) for the Scientific Steering Committee of the Land-Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone (LOICZ) project of the IGBP.
Patrick’s main research interests are in the ecology and biogeochemistry of marine phytoplankton, with a particular focus on coccolithophores. He was a recipient of the Plymouth Marine Sciences silver medal in 2006, and the Challenger Society gold medal in 2010.
